Emerging Technology Post 3

1) Communication and Social Networking, specifically Skype.

2) Skype is a program that allows the user to make voice calls over the internet. It is free to call other skype users and is nice for use with family or friends. It also allows users to instant message with others and have video conferences or calls with video. Skype is also accessible on a number of phones which make it possible to see the person you are speaking with on your phones screen.

3) A few weeks after this class started is when I first started using skype. My girlfriend lives in Evansville and I live in Indianapolis so we wanted to be able to see each other when I was not down there visiting her. I bought a camera and set it up and then downloaded the skype program. It was easy to set up and is very easy to use in my opinion. It was obviously helpful for me in that respect, but I can talk to all of my friends who go home for the summer also. It is also great if you want to see family members and talk to them.

4) I cannot really show an example of my use of skype.

5) I suggest everyone get it if you have a camera for your computer. It is easy to use and is a fun, easy way to keep in touch with family and friends!

Emerging Technology Post 2

1) The technology I chose to explore this week was digital photo editing.

2) Picnik, picasa, flickr, and photobucket are all examples of digital photo editing programs. These programs allow users to crop, resize, add color or text, effects, and add borders among many other things. These programs are useful because they allow the user to display their photos in a creative fashion. Many people use these types of programs to edit their photos for facebook and other networking sites.

3) The program that I used was Picnik. I had never used it before but it was a lot of fun! My girlfriend and I went to the website and all we had to do was upload a photo and then we were able to go to work. If you want to, you can sign up and join, but we just did the one photo. I was very surprised at the amount of things you can do to your pictures and how easy it was to use. The website is very user friendly. I had never used it before but we had so much fun we are thinking of doing it again!

4/5) The picture on this post is the one I edited. It is from this easter with my girlfriend. We were having an easter egg hunt and throwing her cousins shot-put around. We added a border and some effects to it along with some text.

Podcasting

2) A summary of the emerging technology

Podcasting is the distribution of digital media. It can be seen with news and music and includes the use of video.

3) Personal Testimony

I have had a lousy time with this technology. I have never done this before so my girlfriend offered to help while I was visiting her earlier this week. We created the actual podcast part, but for some reason my computer will not download the LAME part that goes along with audacity. I have been trying to download it all week since it seemed like the most likely option to work. Creating the podcast was a piece of cake, but the downloading all the extra things has been ruining my week. So now I have a podcast saved to my computer but thats it. I like the idea of podcasting and use them frequently to listen to music and such, but I had a hard time putting one up myself.


5) My suggestions would be to try out all of the different podcasting technologies. I am stubborn and believed that I could make audacity work, but time is up and I couldnt, so now I have nothing to show for the work I have put into it.

First Blog

Hello, All!

My name is Noah Carpenter and I am 21 years old. I have lived in Indianapolis for about eight years now. I was born into an Army family so we moved a lot while I was growing up. I was born in Germany, then moved to Hawaii, then Missouri, Virginia, Alabama, back to Missouri, and then here to Indy when my parents retired. I have one older sister who just graduated from IU last year. We are very involved in dog rescue, specifically Pugs. My mother runs a rescue program for them in Indiana and Kentucky. In all we have seven pugs.

I started school a little bit earlier so I was only seventeen when I started at IUPUI and now I am in my fourth year. I am a secondary education major, social studies, and I just changed my major for the third time. So now I have two more years to go.

I have never used a blog in my entire life so this is new to me. I do use facebook, as I am sure we all do, and this is different. It is similar enough to know how to use things though. The setup was really straightforward and easy, and you can add some pretty cool stuff. I added a video bar with videos of my favorite soccer player. I suggest that everyone just play around with all of the options, you might find something fun to put on your blog!
